John, I’m a smallmouth bass guide in Maine.  You should use a good quality rod with enough backbone to get a good hookset. I use 1/2 oz gig & pig to get “larger” smallmouth (over 16″), so I use a baitcaster spolled with 14 lb test….. When I need to catch lots of fish and size is unimportant, I use a medium to med./heavy action spinning rod, 8 lb test, and throw 1/8 oz gig w/grubs or tubes,,,,,ie Match your lure the bite, so when you go to the store a simple check for this is to hold the rod by the handle, touch the rod tip to a friends throught and have them speak.virginia state record largemouth bass You should be able to feel the vibrations of their voice. Try this with a number of rods for comparason…..Avoid rods that are longer than you are tall, (5 1/2 ft. works best for most folks), whippy rods or two piece. Look for a confortable handle. I use cork, mostley Tennasee handles, (the are BPS Bionic Blade, Browning, St.Cruoix, G-Loumis . I have an attic full of K-Mart, Wal-mart, & $30.00 rods.
