<snip Be aware that high-powered rifles are NOT allowed in Illinois. Shotguns, muzzleloaders and handguns, I believe, are the only legal weapons for deer hunting in Illinois. Better check Missouri and Mississippi to see what’s allowed there as well.

I used it to take a deer last Fall. The first shot went through the heart and clear through the body out the back end leaving a 2″ wide hole, no bones hit. Nonetheless it started running (towards me!) and right before it passed in front of me I put another through the chest, and far shoulder bone. Didn’t live much longer after that. All of this was at VERY close range and the gun handled very instinctively and without any thought. I don’t even remember reloading between shots, just thinking that it was a good idea to reload and then I just took the next shot. The second shot was pointing, not aiming and it hit EXACTLY where I wanted it to.Bass Fishing sale used 20 Trap shooting pays off! The point is that it’s a very natural pointing gun. 2) Can you scope it? (I did not notice where the ejection was).
Yes! This is one of Marlin’s great selling points. However, I have a bolt action for long-range (scope required) hunting so after last Fall I decided to leave it open-sighted. I have no gripes with the Winchester (I think their big-bore is .375, nothing to sneeze at) but the Marlin is a better choice for scope mounting. Some prefer the lever feel of the Win but I’m quite happy. 444SS’s and ammo are easier to find (at least around these parts) than .375. Things may be different where you are. You can get Weaver brand aluminum see-though mounts if you like, or solid steel Redfield mounts. 3) Does anyone have any better suggestions? Remember, I am brush hunting, I hate bolt actions, and I don’t want a semi-auto.
Marlin’s 44 Mag is lighter, shorter and handier. The 444 will buy you a very confident extra 50 yards range. If you hunt muley, elk, moose etc. the 444 is a better choice. It is also more confidence inspiring if deer hunting in Bear country. The gun’s achilles heel is the factory loading. It is powerful, but the bullet is a barely jacketed soft point that expands too quickly at 444 velocities (unless you’re pushing the outer range of the gun.) Hornday makes a 265 grain flat point with a full-side, progressive taper jacket to a smaller lead metplat (flat point), which makes for both better ballistics and controlled expansion. I used the Hornady bullet and was quite happy. I guess the factory load is OK for whitetail but I wouldn’t use it on anything bigger due to penetration concerns. There’s also the meat-destruction issue. A shop owner was telling me “I saw a deer hit with a 444 once…” and then shook his head. I’m sure he was talking about factory loads. You’ll probably see some opinions to get the 45/70 model. If you don’t reload the 45/70 has much inferior performance. The 444 shoots much flatter with factory loads. With handloads for both, the 45/70 will always shoot a heavier bullet with more energy, but the 444 will usually retain a slightly flatter trajectory. 444 brass is also always high-pressure, standard 45/70 is fairly thin, low pressure brass unless you special order the custom stuff. There is also two Safari A-Frame bullets in 444 (.429″), a 240 and a 300 grain. With the Hornady 265 gr falling in between that gives a fair amount of versatility. Factory ammo seems more available than for the .444 and in greater variety as well. Robert, I also agree with Ken on the 95’s handling, I have a Marlin 95 in .44Mag. I too find the square lever unconfortable, I wonder if anybody offers a round replacement lever? Or maybe I’ll heat it and reshape it. I would be inclined to get the .444 over the .45/70, I think the .45/70 would be better for longer shots, but you said you wanted it for close in brush work. I’d take the flatter .444 over the harder hitting .45/70 for that purpose. I’m not so sure you want to put a scope on it, it might just get in the way. See through mounts might solve that though. I can shoot my .44mag into 8″ pie plates out to about 100yrds with open sights, off hand, and at a fairly fast rate. I’m not sure I could shoot as fast with a scope. Have you given any thought to the pump actions such as the Rem 760/7600? They should be even quicker to shoot than the lever actions. You can also get more potent calibers, such as the 30-06 or .308. I have had some experience with a particular Rem 760 pump in .30-06, the gun was very accurate and over the years has belonged to my Father and Grandfather, and has shot more deer than I care to count. I don’t know much about the current 7600’s but I know the older 760’s have been known to be good shooters. If you shoot a pump shotgun, a pump rifle would be a good compliment. Just my thoughts on the subject. Mike in Oregon,

The best all around hunting state, IMHO, is Wyoming. It may not be the kind of hunting you are looking for however. I lived there a while back and here is what I found: Big Game outnumbers people by a wide margin. Seasons are long, limits are generous, the State just about begs you to hunt. Pronghorn, deer, elk, moose are plentiful. I think about half the state is public land. Access is great. Everyone there is used to seeing firearms, so there is no hassle factor. There is very little violent crime either, most is comitted by out of staters. Landowners are generally receptive to hunting. There is virtually no hunter competition for small game, the seasons is about 6 months long I think, due to the Big Game focus. Good hunting can be found within a couple of miles of town. A secondary pluses: no state income tax, cheap gasoline, low cost of living in most areas. Great gunsmiths. Open space. Friendly people.

I would have to vote, as several of the responders have, for Kentucky. The Murray, Kentucky area is designed to be a retirement haven, but especially so for the retired + sportsman / woman

Well sir I must speak up for Kentucky. Winters are mild but definate. Summers can be hot and humid but not nearly as the states further south. We sorta sit here between the north and south. MOF the state was divided in its sentiment during the Civil War. For hunting there are lots of public acreage but you can get your own. I am currently looking at 65 acres available in connected 10 acre tracts for $2000 per acre. This is development live and build on land! Down in the state the coal mine companies and lumber companies are selling their used but reclaimed land for under $300 and acre!(No missing zeros there) It is mostly rough ridge land but lots of Whitetail, turkey, squirrel, etc. As you have read Murray Ky. has been listed nationally as the very top retirement area. To date it is NOT touristy at all but adjacent to country living intrests. Come on down and check it all out. Land Between the Lakes (Ky. Lake, Barkley, etc) are terrific.Public gun and archery ranges, hunting and some of the best bass fishing in the world. We CAN eat them too- non toxic. We have thousands of WMA acreage and limited party lease lands too. I have a friend who hunts 500 acres with 6 total men for $100 a year. Combination resident license is $20 a year . Husband a wife combo earns a discount. Turkey tags this year are $21 and the same for deer tags. We have quota draw hunts that are easy to get into on many of the WMA’s including Fort Knox military reservation. These do not count toward bag limits so you possibly with gun season alone kill up to 4 or 5 deer. Add blackpowder only and archery and you can keep a freezer full if you can hunt (;-) I don’t work for the state <G but I’ve traveled around a bit and Ky is one of the best for some things. Now education and politics are a different story…… Louisville, KY. Happy Hunting Grounds

I would have to mention Murray, Ky. Murray for one point is the retirement capital of the world. The cost of living is extremely cheap and they cater to the old. Quail is abdundant it that area, whitetail deer, geese, ducks, squirrels, rabbits, swamp rabbits, turkeys, etc. No pheasant, sorry. You have Land Between the Lakes to hunt on, Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley to fish in. When I say in the area, I mean within an hours drive anyhow. LBL and the lakes is about 20 miles from town. Bald Eagles nest in the area, geese migrate to Ballard Wildlife area every winter (about 1 1/2 hr drive). Out in the county (Calloway) there is plenty of open country and 20 acres should be easy to find at a reasonable cost. As mentioned, it is considered the best place to retire in the country (was hunting a factor?
I’m sure if you called the Murray Chamber of Commerce and told them you were thinking about retiring there, they would be most cooperative. Hope that helps. Grady

If the paradise I described can be : close, it would be even better. 20 acres seems small to me. I’d think you’d want to go for something in the 50-100 acre area minimum just for occasional (twice/week?) hunting. If you’re going to have bass, I’d expect you’d need a decent river (flowing water) or be able to dam it to give you an acre or so of water. Subtract that and the area around your house, and starting with 20 acres, you’d end up with about 15. You could cover that hunting in an hour or so. 20 acres butted up against a national forrest wouldn’t be bad, but you need more if that’s all you’re going to be able to hunt. samg Hewlett Packard/Colorado Springs

Hello Bill; Maybe someone can confirm this, but, doesn’t Alabama have a deer bag limit along the lines of one deer per day? Do I have the right state and bag limit information? That’s incredible to me. How’s the bass fishing in Alabama? Any Alabamans out there to chip in with some info. for Bill? Chris Fulton

Dear William F. Any time anyone asks for the “best” of anything, you’ll get 100 different answers from 100 different people. Here goes my answer. I have lived all over the western 2/3 of the US (Misssissippi, Texas, New Mexico, California, Arizona, California, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Minnesota.) There were some pretty good places in there, but if I had to rate them for overall quality of outdoor activities (hunting and fishing) combined with a quality of life (taxes, availability of services, “friendliness” of people), I would have to put South Dakota on top, followed closely by Missouri (Ozarks area), and then probably Minnesota, Iowa, and Nebraska. I am kind of partial to the upper midwest area. There is a wide variety of game and fish, and an abundance of (public) land upon which to pursue them. It has also been my experience that when people in these areas have the opportunity to be either nice or nasty, they tend to pick nice. Unfortunatly, that has not been my experience everywhere. Good luck in finding your retirement paradise! — ”Please don’t remember me for anything I may have said.”
