Originally from NC and just having moved to Wisconsin 2 years ago, I may need to update my tackle box to cooler waters. 1. equipment bass pro shop  Trilene extra limp castable 12lb. test for all applications. I use mainly jigs, plastic worms and frogs.  Have a wide selection of Poes and Rapala crankbaits I use when nothing else is being hit. The Palomar knot is a good strong easy and quick to tie knot.  My 8 year old nephew can tie it..   It is extremely easy for a first knot for your kids to learn.. Culprit worms in red shad and motor oil/charteuese color are a must. 7.5 inch on a 3/0 hook.  Pumpkinseed work great also in weeds and tree stands.   Carolina rig these to help cut down on snags. Stanley Jigs are outstanding on lilypads and down trees and overhangs. Black and blue skirts work great on sunny days.. Zoom lizards are a outstanding lure for topwater over weeds and moss.equipment bass pro shop  Aire lizard work great too but are expensive..   If u can carry one in your tackle box safely..  Get a syringe (unused of course) and inject air into the for more buoyancy.. My ultimate top water lure—HULA POPPER!!!! Use this on shade lines in 1 to 10 feet of water.. Always have good luck wiht this in the afternoon..  Along the shore line and where the sun and shade break..  Once u learn the best technique for your area or favorite lake..  Come 5 oclock its HULA time!!!!   Zara spooks work well also in open water…equipment bass pro shop. Sorry for rambling..  A bad day fishing is BETTER than a good day working…. Mark Hurley Wisconsin

Great questions, Craig. Here are my non-standard answers.

Here is a small series of questions that I think once answered could help a lot of people. 1. What line size do you use to fish with for, and why? 2. When do you use leaders, what type and why?

(These 2 questions are combined here for my particular answers, which will always be a combination of Flame Green Fireline with a matching 10′ length of mono or flourocarbon leader. This combination assures superb visibility, castability, sensitivity, durability, good knot strength & integrity, long-term economy, and consistancy in use. I must admit the Fireline is noisy, and if the braids had better knot characteristics and were available in high visibility colors, I would try them in a heartbeat. a) Spinnerbaits:

14#/14#,  20#/20# or 30#/30#, depending on lure size and cover fished. b) Jerkbaits:

10#/10# or 14#/14#, depending on lure size. c) Crankbaits (shallow, medium, and deep divers):

10#/10#, 14#/10#, 14#/14#, 20#/14# or 20#/20#, depending on clarity and depth desired. d) Worming/Soft Plastics (both finesse and normal):

Finesse: 10#/6#, 10#/8#, 14#/10# or 20#/14#, depending on lure, clarity & cover. Normal & (f) Jigs: 14#/14#, 20#/20# or 30#/30#, depending on lure, clarity & cover. e) Topwater:

14#/10#, 14#/14#, 14#/20#, 20#/20#, depending on lure & clarity. 3. What knots do you use for, and why? a) Tying on leaders:

Bloodknots, although dual Uni-knots would work well also. b) Crankbaits/Jerkbaits/Topwater:

Crankbaits: Palomar. Note I always use Duolock snaps and always remove the split rings from the lures themselves if possible. Jerkbaits/Topwaters: Palomar first choice, Uni-knot second. I don’t seem to tie the Trilene knot well, so I don’t use it as I might otherwise. c) Hooks:

Palomar d) Jigs:

Palomar e) Spinnerbaits:

Palomar, directly on Doulock snaps. If the lure has an R-bend line tie, I always use a short piece of plastic tubing over the bend to prevent the snap from slipping.. For some strange reason, I never seem to have the common problem of having the line wrap around & behind the tie. f) Tying line onto the spool:

Uni-knot. I want to clarify an error on a previous post, wherein I stated that I never use backing when tieing my Fireline on the spool. I guess I was hallucinating because I buy the Fireline in 125 yard spools and cut it in half, and then use super-cheap 10# mono as backing all the time. Never a problem. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Craig Baugher

Here is a small series of questions that I think once answered could help a lot of people. 1. What line size do you use to fish with for, and why? a) Spinnerbaits – 50lb. PowerPro, I fish heavy cover and we have LOTS of

toothy critters (muskie, pike).  I get cut off a lot less using this line. b) Jerkbaits – Same line as above, for the same reasons plus the lures work

easier, you don’t have to overcome the stretch of the mono, the response to the lure is immediate. c) Crankbaits (shallow, medium, and deep divers) – Same line as above

except for the deep diving, then I use 4/10 FireLine.  The small diameter allows the lure to dive deeper. d) Worming/Soft Plastics (both finesse and normal) – Finesse, I use 4/10

FireLine, the sensitivity is unbeatable.  Normal, the 50lb. PowerPro. e) Topwater – 50lb PowerPro, toothy critters doncha know! f) Jigs – Open water, 4/10 FireLine, Thick cover? 50lb PowerPro 2. When do you use leaders, what type and why? – I use solid wire leaders

when fishing jerkbaits.  I’ve found that if I don’t, especially when using “glidebaits” that the line gets fouled up on the front hooks.  Otherwise, I rarely use leaders, that’s what the PowerPro is for. 3. What knots do you use for, and why?  For all of the following, I use

either the Trilene Knot or an Improved Clinch knot with 7 wraps on the line. I don’t know why I use them other than the fact that they’re easy to tie and I’ve never had a knot slip with 7 wraps.  I do use a square knot for tying the line onto the spool, then cover it with electrical tape to keep the line from spinning on the spool. a) Tying on leaders b) Crankbaits/Jerkbaits/Topwater c) Hooks d) Jigs e) Spinnerbaits f) Tying line onto the spool

Good post Craig, I’m sure that you’ll get many different responses.  I so the above because I’ve found that it works for me up here.  I’m sure that if I lived in an area that didn’t have as many muskies and pike that I’d “downscale” my line but hey, good lures that work are expensive and hard to come by.  I hate loosing lures to fish, while I’m sure that many times, the lure works free, just as many times they don’t and it bothers me that I might have killed a fish because I wanted to be more sporting and use light line.  Also, clients are paying me to put fish in the boat, I want to give them all the chance to do that as I can. But these are just my opinions, –

1. What line size do you use to fish with for, and why? a) Spinnerbaits

–8 lb. Trilene Advanced Polychromatic on my medium baitcasters, 4 lb. on my light and ultra-light (UL) spinning reels (for in-line spinners). b) Jerkbaits

–Same as above. c) Crankbaits (shallow, medium, and deep divers)

–Same as baitcasters above. d) Worming/Soft Plastics (both finesse and normal)

–6 lb. Trilene XL on medium-light (ML) spinning equipment. e) Topwater

–Again, my bait casting rigs mentioned above. f) Jigs

–Same as baitcasters above. 2. When do you use leaders, what type and why?

–Carolina rigs; 6 lb. test with 1/4 oz. bullet sinker above barrel swivel with 1-2 foot leader of 8 lb. test on ML spinning outfit; gets bait (soft plastics) deep quickly, but keeps bait off the floor of the lake. –Wacky Worm; 4 lb. test with barrel swivel on UL reel with 1-2 foot leader of 8 lb. test; I cast to the outside edge of lily pads so it drops very slowly, giving bass loads of time to get a good look at the bait. 3. What knots do you use for, and why? a) Tying on leaders b) Crankbaits/Jerkbaits/Topwater c) Hooks d) Jigs e) Spinnerbaits

–I simply use a cinch knot for all of the above. f) Tying line onto the spool

–I feel using a cinch knot here is too big, so I use just a plain old regular knot (not sure what it’s called).
