books on bass fishing?largemouth bass sketches??
Question:
I was suprized that y’all missed largemouth bass sketches the most famous bass book of all time. The title is “Spoonplugging-your guide to lunker catches”. The author is Buck Perry, P.O Box 66, Hickory N.C. Check out his web page by searching “spoonplugging”
Response:
<<The book is called, “Bass Fishing in California,”largemouth bass sketches and is authored by Ron Kovach, with reference to such west coast pros as: Dee Thomas, Don Iovino, Don Payne and others Thanks for your comment – it is pretty hard to stump me on any Bass book that received national distribution but I keep hoping. The Kovach book has been revised twice and I have all three editions. I thought “Serious Bass Fishing” which he did with Mike Folkestad was a better book. I just recently discovered “Fly Fishing Afoot For Western Bass” by Ken Hanley.largemouth bass sketches Evidently Hanley published this himself and it didn’t receive widespread publicity. The book just received regional publicity and it was a year or so before I found out. It covers Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Arizone, and Northwestern Mainland Mexico. Thanks again and Bass regards Clyde

<<You might consider checking out your regional libraries.largemouth bass sketches..if yours are like ours, they often sell old (fairly current issues) magazines for almost nothing, i.e., 5-10 cents each. If you’re lucky, they will have some of the more popular fish or fish/hunting mags such as Bassin or Field&Stream. Thanks – I do watch for that type of sale all the time. Unfortunately in this part of the country most libraries don’t subscribe to Bass magazines. For my pruposes I’m only interested in those that are devoted to Black Bass. I used to get all the outdoor magazines but no longer have room for them. Thanks and Bass wishes

<<I was suprized that y’all missed the most famous bass book of all time. The title is “Spoonplugging-your guide to lunker catches”. I was searching for little known books devoted to Black Bass. I have all of Buck’s books including the nine-volume set “Guidelines to Fishing Success.” I don’t consider the Father of Structure Fishing or his books “little known.” When I asked the question I was hoping someone would tell me about a local book published by a local pro, angler, guide, newspaper, etc., because these are very difficult to find out about. Everyone is entitled to his opinion but I’d probably say “Book of the Black Bass” by Dr. James Alexander Henshall is closer to being the most famous Bass book of all time. It was reprinted over a 100 year period. If “Your Guide to Lunker Catches” is still in print in 2065, I’ll grant it that status. Not to try and take anything away from Buck because most of todays structure fishing methods, including those of In-Fisherman, evolved from Buck’s teaching. Buck also created an organization, “Spoonpluggers of America” in the 1960s and it is still alive and well. They can be contacted at PO Box 231, Hixon TN 37343. Or you can contact the Since you know about his page I’m probably not telling you anything new but someone else might read this and be interested. Bass regards,

While you are most likely NOT from Northern California, there is a book (geared primarily to this region)largemouth bass sketches that has a tremendous amount of fairly up-to-date information about bass fishing techniques, basic equipment, plastic worm rigging, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, topwater, jigs, live bait — different ways to utilize and/or modify these bass-fishing ‘weapons.’ I still keep it handy as a reference, if not a ‘bible,’ for venturing out in search of ol’ bucketmouth. The book is called, “Bass Fishing in California,” and is authored by Ron Kovach, with reference to such west coast pros as: Dee Thomas, Don Iovino, Don Payne and others. While they cover alot in the way of flippin’ & finesse worming & such — methods that have their roots in west coast fishing — any aspiring bass fisherman will find much to learn about all aspects of the sport. I would recommend the book to anyone, anywhere who is interested in chasing ‘Mr. Green’! You could skip the section about the various California lakes that the book gives specific information on, but the data is very well organized, and it’s all put together quite nicely in one handy reference. Give it a look, if you can find it! (I could give you more specifics about the publisher, etc., if you’re interested). Tight Lines! J Smith Sunnyvale, CA

Kev your statement on Bass books interested me. I’m sure I own the most extensive library of Bass books and magazines ever assembled and am always searching for people to exchange information with. Mostly because there are so many locally published books, written by bass pros, guides, tackle shops, newspapers, etc., that I never see advertised. Sometimes it is years before a book comes to my attention. If you’re interested in exchanging information please let me know. Bass regards, Clyde Drury

If you haven’t already, you might want to check out Harry Murray’s smallmouth book. You can get info on it at the Virginia flyfishing page, www.sklarew.com/vaflyfish. Go into his flyshop icon. Bill C.

Thanks Bill, I appreciate your response. Books such as Harry Murray’s are usually no trouble for me because they are published by publishers that provide widespread distribution. In fact, I recently wrote a review of Will Ryan’s new book “Smallmouth Strategies for the Fly Rod” and when I discovered that Harry’s book was not only still available but just released in a soft cover version, I included it in that column too. These are the only two books available that are devoted to the long rod for Smallmouth. As such they belong side by side on any fly fishers shelf. With the surging interest in fly fishing for bass I’m sure there will be more. My best regards, Clyde

Paul, Bassmasters magazine is a very good magazine for How To articles. They frequently have articles on locating fish especially seasonal hold ups. If you are a beginner I would strongly recommend subscribing. Check your local sporting goods retailer for books, if you have a Sports Authority store near you they usually have a good selection. Also Basspro Shops, a mail order company, has a great selection of books. You can visit my page for links to Bassmaster Magazine and Basspro Shops.
