Potomac largemouth bass to- Winter Bass Fishing
Question:
Here is a recent experience we had on Nanjemoy Creek off the Potomac River in Maryland.largemouth bass to Maybe someone more experienced could offer some advice? We fished Nanjemoy Creek and area just off the Potomac looking for Largemouth Bass. I saw a few jumping and also some perch jumping as well. We fished moderately shallow water off deeper water. Our theory was that since the DC area was having a warm spell (High 50’s to 60’s) Monday 30th of Dec, we would find a few fish going shallow to eat.largemouth bass to What was wrong with our theory and where in the Potomac do the Largemouth Bass winter? Anyone have advice for a rookie in tidal water areas? Thanks

The Potomac River can be a great place to fish during the Winter.largemouth bass to I would reccomend getting Ken Penrods Book(s) on fishing the Potomac, he is the recognized authority on the Potomac River. In the mean time go out and get a couple Silver Buddies or Cicadas ( they are a blade/jigging type bait). Rig using a baitcasting outfit with atleast 14lb. test monofilament. Now, I like launching from Smallwood on Mattawoman Creek, only because I am familiar with the area, and fishing the steep dropoffs where shallow flats are close by.largemouth bass to I position my boat in the deep water where I can cast to the shallow edge of the dropoff and work the Silver Buddy down the slope bouncing it off the bottom. If you exit the mouth of mattawoman and head North about 1/8 a mile yoou might be able to find a nice ittle section on the Md side of the river. Good

Its been my experience in the Potomac in the winter the fish tend to go deeper.largemouth bass to Try the smallwood state park boat mooring peir pilons. I suggest a jig and pig (blue&black works for me) fished tight against the pilon. If that dont pay off try the route 1 bridge in occquan creek its the first road bridge in the creek position your boat between the left most bridge support and the next support toss med. and deep cranks toward the supports. Theres the debris from the old bridge that was destroyed in a hurricane in 72 under there. You will feel the debris down there. try a big worm or pig and jig there to. The railroad bridge there is allright to.I fish the stick ups by the tressel you will see them from the route 1 bridge. If theyre not there try the cliff on the other side of Occquan creek crank it good fish suppend there in the winter.E mail me if any of this works for you. Good fishing.

Eddie, My advice would be to pay more attention to water temperature, specifically change of water temp. A warm day may not make any difference at all to the fish if the water remains at the same temp. Quite often when the sun comes out and warms the water in the shallows, some bass will move in to feed then move back to the deeper water. Fishing “in-between” water doesn’t seem to pay off during the winter. Fish the shallows which offer quick access to deep water, or fish the deeper drop-offs where the fish are holding. I’ve never fished the Potomac but have some experience fishing the Chesapeake and Susquehanna Flats which is tidal water similar to the Potomac. Bass in tidal water go with the tide. When the tide is out, they tend to bunch up in the small areas of deep water around piers, docks or holes. As the tide moves in, they’ll move out and scatter to find food. Whenever you find fish in these deeper holes, mark it on your map. Fish seem to come back to these same spots over and over again. I’ve seen many tournaments won by anglers who knew one spot and stayed there all day waiting for the tide to go out. It amounts to waiting several hours with no fish then catching several fish in a short period. While I have some experience with tidal water, it is limited and perhaps some of the others here might be of better help. I do know that Bass caught in tidal water seem a lot stronger and put up a much better fight then their landlocked counterparts. Hope this helps. Good Fishing John
