A question I'top smallmouth bass lures ve been meaning to ask for a while.

Question:

On some of the smallmouth bass I’ve caught top smallmouth bass lures I’ve noticed that they have a row of dimples that look almost like hookmarks on the bone under their lips/jaws. I’m sure they weren’t hook marks and am curious, could anyone tell me it that is normal and if so, what are they? — So it goes.

Great question!  I noticed the same on smallmouth last summer.  I assumed them to be hookmarks.  But here is my theory:  It is where fins of forage fish are penetrating the lower jaw as they are being munched on……This is probably wrong but I have seen fish with other fish stuck in their throat cause the prey flared its fins as they were being inhaled……. so maybe?  Yes, please, someone supply a real answer to this.

I thought they were too symmetrically placed on the jaw for that. They didn’t look ragged and there was no visible scarring.top smallmouth bass lures

Response:

Hi, Northern Pike have some sensory organs that run along/under the lower jaw, could this be the same thing that is more visible on some smallmouth than others?  Just a guess, as I have no smallmouth handy at the moment & cannot ever recall noticing the “pores” on the fish I’ve caught (working quickly to get them back in the water).
