It depends on the area and water temperature of the lake.  Here in South Florida pine trees deteriorate and disappear within 6 months so they don’t do much good.  I dropped a few into our lake for habitat improvement and could spot them on the fishfinder for a few months, then they just disappeared.  Florida Game and Freshwater Fish Commission confirms this advice.world smallmouth bass  Now we use hardwoods, such as sections of citrus or black olive.

Christmas trees work better for protecting small baitfish and gamefish fry but for fishing structure, something like a willow tree will do better. You wont hang up near as much. And with the limbs being farther apart, it allows the crappie and bass room to get in there to hide. http://members.aol.com/swaters1/index.html

Here’s a better idea and one that lasts much, much longer. Find a roll of the plastic snow fence material (sometimes you can get this used from a contractor), cut about ten feet and staple it in a circle, insert an X made of 2×2 or 2×4s to keep it’s shape, using poly rope install a plastic bleach bottle for the right flotation to keep it upright and bricks or building block for anchor. The poly rope length can be used to suspend the height of the “crappie condo”. This baby will last for several years. There’s a lot less hangups also.

Gene, a friend of mine has.  He says that he has had great results.  He did it specifically for crappie or “sac a lait”.  The trick is remembering where you sunk the trees.  If you need any more info, post and I’ll get back to you. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Has anyone had experience sinking Christmas trees for creating structure for bass or crappie? Our local DNR doesn’t encourage this practice.  They define it as building a “fish attractant” rather than “habitat”.  In our lake we sink fish “cribs”–3-6 inch diameter oak logs 8 ft long held together with rebar in roughly the shape of a 6 ft cube.  These are then filled with X’mas trees/brush, closed off at the top and sunk in 14-18 ft of water. Last winter we sank 39 in about 1 square block of water.  (There are hundreds more in our lake.)  Reports are that they have attracted all species of fish in our lake from crappies to walleyes to smallmouth bass to muskys as well as most of the forage fish species.  We are going to do it again this February. Response:

Yes, We tie them together and sink them with cinder blocks.  The bass stack up on them.  They do not last as long as harder wood does, so you can change locations every year and your own private hot spots. Christmas trees arent the best type of cover due to clost limbs, it tends to protect the bait too much for bass anyway. The farther the limbs are spread the better, to an extent.  I would suggest not putting them on points, they are too easily found.  I like to put mine on a good channel ledge in a creek or river. The best ones on clear lakes is from 12-15 foot with a drop into deeper water immediately adjacent.

Here Bud!!…why don’t you just throw off some tires, sink and old car or fridg. Better yet I’d like to see you take your boat out and chop some holes in it…now that would make some excellent structure!!…and keep you from trashing up the lake.

I would agree with most of what you stated, except the depth you recommend. Bass Pro Shops weekly radio program had a talk on this earlier in the year and they stated that the best depth for this type of attractant is water no more than 10 feet deep and that it’s best to have the tree top out at about 2-3 feet below the waters surface. This will bring in the crappies like crazy… I have tried it and it works well. The tree will only work well for about 6-8 months and will not attract good numbers of fish for about a month after it is placed. Weighting it down with cement blocks is a must.

I have been going up with a group of guys every few years since 1965. We have been going to Mar Mac lodge in Ontario.wis dnr smallmouth bass The Lake is Esnagai. Great walleye and Northern Pike fishing. They have great outpost cabins and cabins at the lodge with electricity by generater. Prices are good people are nice fishing is great. Jerry, I can highly recommend Garden Island Lodge in Ontario (http://www.garden-island.com).  It is a boat-in rather than fly-in.  A group of us were looking for a new place (We fished in Quebec previously) some years back and stumbled across the web page.wis dnr smallmouth bass  It looked too good to be true but we tried it.  Have been back several times now.  The fishing was very good (walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass) on the main lake and there is Lake Trout on a portage lake.  The owner keeps the place up and constantly improves it.  He believes you are there to fish and he takes care of the rest.  Most highly recommended. wis dnr smallmouth bass My son and I are talking about doing a fly-in trip to Canada next year and we all know that Moe’s the one for Florida (which I hope to occur in February) but I need some suggestions for this one. Go to http://www.lake-link.com and look for Mousseau’s Island Lodge.  It’s not a fly in, it’s a boat in but I really couldn’t tell the difference.  The fishing was fantastic, we caught dozens of lake trout daily, all the walleyes we wanted and some really big northern pike.  The accomodations are rustic yet have all the comforts of home and Art & Rita, the owners are really nice people.  Rita is a fantastic cook too. I don’t have any stake in this other than I was there in September/October and I had the time of my life. –

Lots of Fish smallmouth bass fly fishing- Not Biting

Question:

Years ago, smallmouth bass fly fishing I read an article that said that when a bass is caught, he releases an enzyme back into the water that warns the other fish about danger.  I have seen this same thing happen with Smallmouth Bass, and I will catch three or four, smallmouth bass fly fishing the it just quits.  So their might be something to this theory.

I was headed home from Austin yesterday and stopped to fish a little. I tripped across a small honey hole of a river pool full of fish. It’s no more than ~30×50 yds., clear water, fast current in one area, solid smooth rock surrounding it. Absolutely no brush or weeds in or around the water. Depth varies from a couple of feet to unknown. Appears there are a couple of deep holes. Several underwater rock drop offs and overhangs.smallmouth bass fly fishing I first threw a little yellow grasshopper floater/diver in the current and caught a small guadalupe bass on the third cast. Caught 3 more on the next 3 casts. I could see what I think are many channel cats on the bottom. A couple looked to be about the size of my leg. Anyway, I caught about 8 bass in the first 30 minutes or so and then they just quit. I threw out just about everything in the tackle box and got only a single bump on a plastic worm. Just before I was going to leave, I went to the downstream side of the pool. It was a sheer drop off into the water. At about 8 ft. I was stunned to see a couple of dozen various bass holding. They would not even look at anything I put in the water. I ran everything I had by them, even literally hanging plastic worms in front of their faces and they just turned away. Can somebody please explain this? Were they just not hungry? Was it that the water was so clear that they wouldn’t look at anything that wasn’t natural bait? It was about 4:30 in the afternoon (about 1 1/2 hrs. before dark). I have a 13 yr.smallmouth bass fly fishing  old girl who just got interested in fishing and she needs to catch some fish. This seems like an excellent chance for it.

Sounds to me like you found their hang out . I’d imagine that their ” refrigerator ” was over by the current . I suggest using that current to ” float ” things to them .smallmouth bass fly fishing You could possibly find a lure that draws a reaction strike , but your more likely to have success with the natural approach , using the current . I recently read an article about using bobbers and artificial lures for bass . I’m not much on bobbers but I do think this might be a great way to present a lure when there’s a fairly strong current to deal with . In other words , I can see it working . Using a presentation that ” goes with the flow ” has been good to me .

You might also want to try the Dreaded Evil Live Bait.  Get some smallish bream or panfish, hook ‘em, and let them swim around bleeding.  That can get the bass going.  (at least, that’s how my uncle caught his twelve pounder!) — lazarus I shave with Occam’s Razor every morning.

Best Day on the Water.smallmouth bass fly fishing..

Question:

One of my best days fishing was at Kickapoo Creek outlet into Lake Livingston, smallmouth bass fly fishing Texas in the late spring of 1977.  I was fishing in my old Ouachita  but I’m not the tournament kinda guy if I get distracted–of course it is easy for me to be distracted since I have so many interests other than bassfishing. I caught 30 bass averaging 3 pounds for a total of 90 pounds within an hour! They were white bass, however, and no good for a weigh-in.  However, I did glean one or two dinky black bass from that area during the melee.  My arms were tired, let me tell you!  I catch and release all the time, regardless (except the world record black bass–if I catch that one I’ll release it into a holding tank). I was fishing conditions that I thought ideal for positioning/time of year.smallmouth bass fly fishing The creek outlet had made a sandbar (had a wet spring) that I ripped a Bomber Model A down.  The water coming from the creek was pretty dingy and there was some mixing with the lake water. The first strike was a JOLT! that I immediately thought was a beauty of a black bass; alas, not so.  But it weight 3.5 pounds.  I caught, weighed and released the other 29 after a helluva fight with each one, and the biggest weighed 3.8 and the smallest 2.10.  Great day on the water, even though it was foggy and still and that preceeded a helluva storm.  I got off the water, as always, when it begins to lightning, smallmouth bass fly fishing however far away (usually 3 miles).

A couple of years ago me and a buddy went up to Lake Pleasant.  It was a glorious spring day (which means February here in AZ).smallmouth bass fly fishing  We got into the back of a big cove and found white bass, crappie and largemouth having a feeding frenzy on the shad.  We were throwing some small pearl-colored soft plastic minnows he had brought along.  We were pulling one in on every 4th or 5th cast.  All we had to do was circle around the back of that bay all day chasing the shad. I don’t remember how many fish we took home that day.  There is no limit here on white bass or crappie, but it had to be 3 or 4 dozen each.

A friend and I were fishing in New River in SW Virginia after a rainstorm 4 years ago in June.  After the rain stopped, the smallmouth bass starting biting everything we threw out.  We were primarily using “Little Lucies”, a small twirling worm and topwater baits;smallmouth bass fly fishing we caught 15 nice fish each, which we released. Later in the evening, my friend hooked a submarine of a musky, which promptly ran up the river….he never even slowed it down.  I pulled my line in…..and had a fish–A 5 inch redeye bass.  I did the only thing that I could think of, as I heard my friend’s line snap…..I hurled this fish in the general direction of the musky.  He promptly ate the fish, and stripped my drag before breaking my line also.  We sat and stared at each other, in shock, before resuming fishing. We hooked two other muskies that day, and despite landing none, it was one of the best fishing days ever.

Probably my best day, except for my Mexico fishing,  was just this past Wed.  I cruised out to the Sacramento River to spend a couple days fishing from my boat.  (With cabin for overnite fishing.  It is very comfortable this way for us California sissys.)  About midnight, after 13 hours at the transom, I finally got my little nibble and bzzt of the clicker.  I hit it hard, and after a pretty good fight, including a breach, I landed a 58″, 50 lb Sturgeon!  I was fishing alone and the greatest challenge was to get the big critter in the boat!  Finally I got him in the net, on the swimstep, whacked him, and wrestled him into the fishbox.   What a great night, my biggest Sturgeon so far!  But not for long.  (‘course, this ain’t a Bass story, but it’s MY best story….)

My best day on the water was july 19 1998.  I got into a school of bass where the first fish out was 5lbs 8oz, second fish..5lbs 13oz,  third fish 6lbs 13oz, the rest were 3lb class but That was the largest school as far as weight went that I have gotten into.  This happened in Ontario Canada Division 10.   I had a great day on the lake and hopefully this year will be as productive.

My best day on the water was in the nuclear plant discharge canal in Russellville Arkanasas on the Arkansas River System’s Lake Dardanelle.  It was in August and the water was approaching the boiling point in that canal.  The bass were in there swirling against the rocks feeding on shad.  So I tied on a rattletrap and burned it along the rocks that whole day.  I caught so many bass to 5 pounds that I had “crankbait” elbow that night.  The catfish men there were so stunned they quit fishing just to watch me reel them in. Great thread!  My best day on the water bass fishing happened about 15 years ago on Lake Toho in central Florida.  My father & I burned up a 100 ct bag of fliptail 8″ worms on schooling bass in open water.  No giants were hooked, but we had about 80 1-3 pound bass in the boat that day.  BIG bluegills were jumping clear out of the water to avoid the carnage, which lasted for hours (we ran out of baits!).  I say this was my best day not because of the tons of fish, but because my dad was there to share it with me… Warren :-) – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – My best day on the water was in the nuclear plant discharge canal in Russellville Arkanasas on the Arkansas River System’s Lake Dardanelle. Mix the dry ingredients, then add the egg yolk, shrimp, etc. and mix well. Take a 6 x 9 inch microwaveable bread pan (or whatever), spray it with Pam (or whatever), pour in the batter and smooth it out with a spoon. Nuke it at 75% for 4 minutes, turn it 90 degrees and nuke for another 4 minutes at 75%. When you remove it from the microwave, invert the pan and tap the bread out onto the cutting board. After it cools, cut it into one inch squares and freeze or refrigerate until used. If you freeze ‘em (as I do), you’ll want to thaw them before feeding. Ok, here is a stupid question. How in the world do I catch the 20 goldfish that are swimming around with the koi in a 2300 gal pond? I have left the net in the water, only one was dumb enough to stay in it.. Maybe I need a black net.. Sorry to be sooo dumb.  pond is 3 feet deep, vertical walls, plants on crates… Sue

Response:

Hi Sue, If you are in the pond, the fish are usually curious and will come to you. This will make the catching easier.  Also, two nets working in unison works well.  One net is held still and the other is used to guide the fish toward the other net. — Bonnie NJ http://www.users.fast.net/~maebe/index.htm – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Ok, here is a stupid question. Steve, I believe that Alfonso is referring to my reference.  A friend and I did actually go through 63 50 lb. boxes of nails (3,150 lbs)  when building his house.  We did everything ourselves, from cutting the trees, cutting the trees into dimensional lumber, building the walls, sheathing the entire house (roof/walls) with full 1″shiplapped boards.  All of the tongue and groove knotty pine was also cut, planed, shaped by us.  The only commercial lumber in the house is plywood subflooring and douglas fir headers over the windows and doors.  It was a 4 year project, a lot of work but the house is beautiful.   For that project, we did use plans. For a canoe rack??? –

Oh, wait. Here in my American Heritage Dictionary, the first definition of the word jargon is “1. Nonsensical, incoherent, or meaningless talk.” Now it makes sense. You do write in jargon, going by that definition.  As far as it being WRITER’S jargon… You keep telling us you are a writer. But have you ever actually written anything? I mean other than your name in the snow. Have you ever submitted an article to a fishing publication, much less SOLD one? Somehow I doubt it. Most of the editors I’ve dealt with over the past 30 years have considered coherence something of a prerequisite in the material they purchased for publication. RichZ

Walter, this is from Steve Huber’s letter about the NWC (North Woods Classic) last May, and we would love to see you there! The details are as follows: The 1st Annual ROFB Northwoods Classic is to be held September 7th and 8th. It will be held in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, the water to be fished is Boom Lake and the conecting Rhinelander Flowage.  This lake holds largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike and muskies.  The tentative plan is that if you are showing up with a partner, the first day will be fished with your partner.  If you don’t have one, arrangements will be made to provide you with one.  The second day is going to be a draw tournament where all boaters and non-boaters will be paired up at random. I will be awarding a custom built “Steve Huber Signature Series” rod to the angler who brings in the largest bass (either largemouth or smallmouth) at the end of the second day.  There will be other prizes and awards (to be determined). On Friday night, we will be invading the Al-Gen Supper Club, home of the finest fish fry in northern Wisconsin.  On Saturday night, we will all be gathering at my house for a venison feed. Accomodations have been arranged at the Claridge Best Western Motor Lodge in Rhinelander.  I have arranged for a rate of $60/night.  This is a decent motel with a restaurant, lounge, pool and hot tub.  Not only that but it’s walking distance to my house. There will be a website up soon with a roster and other information.  The group will be notified when the site is available.  Brian Heilman, a fellow ROFB’r has graciously donated his time and expertise in the development of this site and the preliminary work is awesome. Is there any other details that you need to know?  Can I put you down for a boater? — — Bob Rickard SECRET WEAPON — The world’s finest spinnerbaits! Question:

smallmouth bass fishing Just bought 15 acres in north central Mo. We’ll be developing a mostly dairy goat farm  there, but will include a kennel (rescue), art studio, and sort of computer geek compound. The farm came complete with a small pond. We’ve 5 species of froggies there, and I’m adding a amall number of smallmouth bass, bluegill and grass carp to it. This will be the “fishin pond”. I also have some Koi and shubunkin that I’ve toted from Ca to Ut to Mo for about 8 years. They have a small, temporary pond down next to the well (and fed by it).smallmouth bass fishing After the house is built, I will be landscaping to include  both formal and informal koi and shubunkin ponds, and a seperate formal pond for fantails. Hey there… I’m Cathi. Just bought 15 acres in north central Mo. They have a small, temporary pond down next to the well (and fed by it). After the house is built, I will be landscaping to include  both formal and informal koi and shubunkin ponds, and a seperate formal pond for fantails. I’m kind of a pond junkie… Anyway, nice to meet you all. Hope to learn alot! — Cathleen Newlin Mercer, Mo American Boxer Rescue Assoc <http://www.jps.net/boxer4me

Response:

The St. Lawrence and Black Lake should both be good during those months. Find the warmer water spots. smallmouth bass pro shop You might also want to try the bay areas of Lake Ontario at Sackets Harbor and Chaumont (just south of Cape Vincent).  Both are noted for their Smallie and LM Bass population during the middle of June.

Response:

Lake Champlain is a very good bass lake.  It is in NY & VT, but I prefer the northern NY side.  It is less pressured.
